Proactive Response

The path towards violence is often progressive with cautionary signs along the way. And, we’re learning the cautionary signs fall on a continuum of disruptive behaviors at work.

After a threat or incident of violence in the workplace, it is common for at least one person to come forward and say that he or she had previously witnessed concerning behavior from the perpetrator of the violence. Johns Hopkins wants you to be safe at work. Our goal is to be proactive and prevent incidents of violence from occurring. If you are concerned about behaviors that might escalate into violence, talk with your supervisor, human resources/labor relations, or your academic advisor or chair. Share with him or her the events you observed and how they impacted your job or academic responsibilities. It may be important to note patterns and frequencies of behaviors.

Each employee, faculty member, and student is important to Johns Hopkins’ commitment to a safe learning and working environment. It is crucial that everyone works from a mindset of awareness. This means awareness of those around you so that you can recognize behaviors of concern when they occur. And, be prepared to take action when action is required. All members of the Johns Hopkins community are valued members of the Safe at Hopkins initiatives – if you see something, say something! If you don’t, maybe no one will.
