Johns Hopkins Continuum of Disruptive Behaviors at Work

A subcommittee of the Joint Risk Assessment Team examined the behaviors seen in previous Johns Hopkins workplace violence cases and classified various behaviors across a spectrum adapted from Gary Namie, PhD to develop the Johns Hopkins Continuum of Disruptive Behaviors at Work. Lists of specific actions for each concerning behavior emerged as part of ongoing research on disruptive behaviors at work and early intervention and prevention of workplace violence

Brochures depicting the continuum and information about preventing disruptive behaviors at work from escalating are available for download or in hard copy. If you would like hard copies, please your request for the brochures noting which brochure(s) you would like, the quantities, and your campus address.

Behaviors on the Continuum

The continuum includes eight categories of concerning behavior. Behaviors on the left side of the continuum should be considered within the context of the work/academic environment. If you are concerned about behaviors that might escalate into violence, talk with your supervisor, human resources/labor relations, or your academic advisor or chair. Share with him or her the events you observed and how they impacted your job or academic responsibilities. It may be important to note patterns and frequencies of behaviors.
